Sophie and Ben's Intimate Mas Wedding at La Deveze in the Cevennes

Sophie and Ben's intimate mas wedding at La Deveze in the Cevennes: stone fountain ceremony, sage bridesmaids, oak-canopy long table, mountain sunset.

By Elena Moretti | Published 29 June 2026 | Last reviewed

Sophie and Ben had been together more than ten years and wanted a wedding that felt like them, not a formal occasion: an intimate, home-away-from-home weekend with the 50 people who had been there from the start. The UK-based couple chose a destination they had always loved, La Devèze, a family-run mas in the Cévennes and one of the wedding venues in Occitanie they had long admired. Daniela Lewis planned the three-day celebration in July 2025.

Getting Ready

Bride from behind showing soft wavy hair with pearl floral pins, mirror reflection in vanity.
Black and white bride fastening earring in baroque mirror with white hydrangeas in foreground.
Bride in silk camisole gets hairspray applied while seated in white wicker chair.
Five sage-green satin bridesmaid dresses on hangers along a white iron staircase.

The gown hung waiting in the morning light, its tulle overlay still attached, the bridesmaids' dresses lined up beside it. Sophie kept her look soft and undone, with natural makeup by Florie Dieleman, the version of herself she felt most at home in. Ben got ready nearby with his groomsmen.

Ceremony

Groom reads vows from card with bride listening, officiant and string quartet through the trees.
Newlyweds share first kiss under oak canopy with officiant and guests on either side.
Wide ceremony view with couple at fountain altar, cellist in foreground and seated guests.
Newlyweds walk through confetti petal shower as guests toss handfuls on either side.

Vows were exchanged by the property's old stone fountain, which the florists filled with soft pastel blooms that seemed to grow out of the water and along the aisle. A string quartet played through the trees. The moment that stood out was a hand-fasting ribbon ritual that brought their families in to mark the long history behind the day, before they walked back up the aisle into the afternoon sun.

Bridal Portraits

Bride in stone hallway with cathedral veil and tulle overlay train fanned across limestone floor.
Black and white back view of bride in strapless gown with button detail and tulle overlay.
Bride in gown with tulle overlay billowing in a sunlit bedroom with sheer curtains and canopy bed.
Bride in vineyard with paper parasol and pastel bouquet in warm golden hour light.

Couple Portraits

Couple walk hand in hand between long dressed tables in the open-air banquet aisle.
Backlit couple kiss in sunset flare with bride's white neck scarf catching the warm light.
Black and white groom laughing and wiping his eye outside the ceremony in a tuxedo.
Back view of couple approaching painted welcome sign with festoon-lit dining beyond.

Sophie and Ben wanted their photography to feel as easy as the day itself, documentary and discreet rather than posed. Mariko Kieffer stayed inside the celebration and let it run, then stole the couple away for a short golden-hour session in the softest evening light, catching the mountain views they had hoped for before returning them to their guests.

Bridal Party

Black and white bride and five bridesmaids in sage satin walk across gravel with bouquets.
Couple kiss centred in a vineyard huddle of cheering bridesmaids and groomsmen.
Five sage-green bridesmaids react with joy and paper fans to the bride at the first reveal.
Black and white bridesmaids in sage satin laugh with raised hands seeing the bride.

Reception

Wide night view through stone gates into courtyard with warm festoon lights and mingling guests.
Couple at long table head with raised flute, lined with bud florals and meadow border at base.
Plated melon and prosciutto first course with basil and balsamic on rustic wooden table.
Wide reception view with seated couple at head table and meadow floral border across the front.

This was never meant to be a single day, but a whole weekend. It opened with a welcome dinner the night before and ran from the string-quartet ceremony to poolside cocktails with mountain views, then to a three-course dinner, catered by La Devèze itself, with a live cooking station. Dessert kept to French tradition: a croquembouche and a champagne tower. The next day closed the weekend with a sun-drenched pool party. Their advice: "Hire a planner. Having someone local who can guide you throughout the process made the whole experience so enjoyable and stress free."

Design and Details

Empty open-air horseshoe banquet under oak trees with white linens, candles and pastel florals.
Detail of stone fountain altar with rose collar and ivy spilling over the pool rim.
Empty ceremony space with stone fountain altar in pastel florals and crossback chair aisle.
Open-air long banquet tables with sage and blush tapers, bud-vase florals and silver coolers.

The design celebrated colour in a way that suited the countryside: soft garden pastels concentrated where they counted, at the ceremony and the long dinner tables, so the stone courtyard and leafy canopy could stay the stars. The florals, by De Fil en Fleur, were loose and wild, the fountain and aisle arrangements later repurposed to dress the dinner. Sophie wore Paloma Blanca with a detachable tulle overlay for the ceremony, then stripped it back and added a white neck scarf for the dance floor; her bridesmaids wore sage-green satin, the men black tie.

Venue

Wide view of al-fresco dining clearing under the oak grove in late afternoon golden light.
Stone courtyard with festoon lights, jasmine walls and terracotta pots in a French country mas.
Stone farmhouse entrance with cypress tree and pink garden florals in Occitanie.

La Devèze, an intimate mas wedding venue in the Cévennes, sits against a dramatic mountain backdrop, rugged and green. One of the most characterful settings for a destination wedding in Occitanie, the mas gave the weekend room to breathe: a pool terrace looking out over mountains and vineyards, shaded courtyards, and the long tables waiting under the trees.
